Cold Weather Preparedness: A Winter Preparedness Lesson

Cold Weather Preparedness | Winter Preparedness Checklist | Weather Preparedness Checklist | How to Prepare for a Winter Storm | Preparing for Winter | Winter Safety Tips | Winter Preparation Checklist | Winter Health Tips

On a brisk fall morning at roughly 4000’ in elevation in the mountains of the Northwest Interior, I’m getting dropped off by my good friend Glenn and his grandson, Spencer.

It’s 4 a.m. and pitch black as they drive away and I slowly lose sight, and eventually sound, of the truck as it rattles off into the wilderness.

Now I am alone in the dark, rugged, and hungry wilderness. What a feeling of mystery, excitement, and vulnerability all packed in together!

My objective, to find a good spot to hunker down and remain still as daylight creeps in and hopefully place myself in the path of a big mule deer or whitetail buck.

I am going to hunt the east side of the mountain, about 5 miles through the wilderness from where those guys are going to eventually make their way around to post up.

The plan is, an hour or two after daylight, to very slowly start making my way toward them. ‘Still hunting’, where you take a few very slow steps at a time and then pause, is the name of the game today as we are not in our own territory and have no access to tree stands.

Although we had gotten there by Glenn’s truck, I was roughly 6 miles from that truck, 6 miles of rugged forest and craggy rocky terrain to traverse to get there. Or, many more miles if I chose the forest road.

The nearest town is a little old pioneer town about 20 miles away. Other than that, nothing, and that’s the way I like it!

There’s something so visceral about being out this far, on foot, completely immersed in the wild, and alone.

Words fall short of describing the stars and sky that morning. The vast skies of the Inland Northwest just give me a feeling that I am unable to compare to anywhere else I have ever been, hence one of a few monikers that the inland northwest state of Montana carries, “Big Sky Country”.

I couldn’t help but think about how the vast majority of people in this country would never experience anything like this and what a shame that is.

No cars, no hum of electricity. Planes don’t even have flight patterns that go over here. No artificial sound whatsoever. It’s almost disorienting, funny enough, and I don’t even live in a populated area to begin with. I can’t imagine what it would be like for someone who lives in the middle of a big city to come here and experience this deprivation of hustle and bustle.

Ok, back to the hunt! It is cold and the wind is eluding to a rough day upon the rising of the sun in about an hour. Thank goodness for my high-quality and reliable lighting, as it is too dark to see your hand in front of your face.

The sky was full of stars but there was no moon to be found, and somehow all surroundings were pitch black despite the solar canopy.

My lighting rig for that morning was my Black Diamond Storm Headlamp and the amazing Streamlight ProTac HL USB 850 Lumen Tactical Flashlight.

My back up lighting snug in my backpack was a little Maglite XL50 Flashlight and a Maglite Solitaire.

You don’t put yourself into this kind of situation without a backup of your backups. Plus, all of these lights put together probably weigh roughly a pound and you won’t notice them until you need them.

After some maneuvering over the rocky terrain, I found a suitable place to perch and stalk, set my pack down, and started making myself at home. However, as the morning turned to light, things starting getting REAL. I mean REAL bone cold with sustained high winds that would harass me for the next 3 hours.

While getting my gear ready the night before, I had a decision to make. Do I take my Fjallraven Bergtagen Eco-Shell Trousers and SITKA Gear Blizzard Parka outer layer set?

Seems like a simple decision and it basically boiled down to what I wanted to haul into the wilderness, my 66L capacity ALPS OutdoorZ Extreme Commander X + Pack or my 37L Badlands 2200 Hunting Pack and Meat Hauler. I had just enough gear for this hunt to completely fill the Badlands 2200, but not enough room to stuff my outer layers.

I had been working over 70 hours a week, was rolling on 3 hours of sleep, and made a lazy decision not to trek in with the bigger pack. That would prove to be a very short sighted and tired decision that would cause me great discomfort for the next 3 hours or so.

I still thought I had come prepared. I had layered and layered well. But it just wasn’t enough for what was coming my way. Here I was, completely alone, no cell service or two way radio, separated from Glenn by 6 miles of rugged forest and rocky terrain, and FREEZING!

Cold Weather Preparedness | Winter Preparedness Checklist | Weather Preparedness Checklist | How to Prepare for a Winter Storm | Preparing for Winter | Winter Safety Tips | Winter Preparation Checklist | Winter Health Tips

No longer were any of my thoughts on hunting and sitting still. My thoughts now, “do I just start hiking my tail off to get to the truck 6 miles away? But, what if all of this wind dies down (it lasted 3 hours) and I have abandoned my perfect hunting spot? But, I can’t just sit here and freeze! I’ve got to find cover!”

Cold Weather Preparedness | Winter Preparedness Checklist | Weather Preparedness Checklist | How to Prepare for a Winter Storm | Preparing for Winter | Winter Safety Tips | Winter Preparation Checklist | Winter Health Tips

The dimly-lit slit of dawn on the horizon, the craggy/rocky terrain, the shrub-like sub-alpine vegetation, and the loud and eerie howling winds, all mixed with sleep deprivation, made for a surreal and kind of psychedelic experience. I felt as if I was on another planet that had perpetual violent windstorms and uninhabitable conditions.

I started realizing that I had a real situation on my hands and needed to stop for a few seconds, pull my head together, and make some decisions. I decided to start looking around the immediate area for cover and found the mid-sized entrance to a very small cave.

Cold Weather Preparedness | Winter Preparedness Checklist | Weather Preparedness Checklist | How to Prepare for a Winter Storm | Preparing for Winter | Winter Safety Tips | Winter Preparation Checklist | Winter Health Tips

To give an idea of how cold and desperate I was, I didn’t even do the slightest check to see if this cave was occupied by a bear, cougar, wolf, or any other animal that could’ve given me a go around. This was MY cave now! I’ll deal with things better once I’m able to warm up a bit.

Sure enough, after about 30 minutes, I was able to warm myself. I came to a conclusion that I would start to make my way around the mountain and towards Glenn. I had been there once before to scout out the area about a year earlier.

I had a vague memory of some dense forest around the bend just a ways. If I could make it roughly a mile or so, maybe I could find some wind block and more relief just outside the forest and maybe be on a different facing side of the mountain that wasn’t getting the same kind of wind.

Cold Weather Preparedness | Winter Preparedness Checklist | Weather Preparedness Checklist | How to Prepare for a Winter Storm | Preparing for Winter | Winter Safety Tips | Winter Preparation Checklist | Winter Health Tips

So, I made my move and after a couple of hours of brutal-winded hiking it turned out I was correct. I found my way into calmer territory and even had some sunshine. After I pulled myself together, I went on to enjoy an unsuccessful hunt, but a hunt nonetheless.

The hike itself was a bit warming and certainly better than just trying to hunker down and sit still. I was happy to finally find Glenn and Spencer and hop in the truck and indulge in a Stanley Thermos full of hot coffee.

Never once during this little struggle was I actually concerned for my life. I knew there were too many options that I hadn’t exhausted and I hadn’t yet begun to exceed my tolerances of resilience. However, it did make me think about a lot of things.

I thought about how bad that could have been if one were to only bend the scenario slightly in a few different ways. How if I had been out there with nobody expecting me or to not have a rendezvous point and if there was never respite from the wind and cold, I could’ve been in a bad situation.

Today’s items are all based on the key components of what I was wearing or had with me that day, and the two (outer layer) stars of the show that I would have given anything to have had with me that day. This is in no way to portray a full list of what you should have on your person and in your pack on a cold mountainous hunt. These are just the basics and a practical nuts and bolts list.

So, if you haven’t already done so, grab yourself a hot beverage and sit back and enjoy perusing for your preparedness!

A Practical Cold weather hunting gear list for winter 2022

ILLUMINATION:

When it comes to lighting the way, I like to have options. I like to have a backup for my backup. Always have a headlamp, at least one.

You should absolutely have the ability to go hands free here. There are too many situations where you are going to need both hands to perform tasks.

Besides a headlamp, I like to have a slender, sturdy, and high lumen flashlight in my pocket and also one in the pack.

I make sure that at least one of those flashlights has a strobe feature. In a self defense situation an intense strobe light can be used to stun an attacker and give you the upper hand in a conflict. It can also be used to alert someone if you need help.

Black Diamond Revolt 350 Headlamp

Headlamps are really nice to have while in the backcountry. Those of us who live in towns or cities forget how much light we are constantly flooded with, until we get out into the wilds.

It helps around camp at night to have a headlamp. They free your hands for use and are generally fairly comfortable to wear. A good headlamp allows you to find your way and work in the dark if need be.

Black Diamond has been one of the best headlamp manufacturers for a while now and the REVOLT 350 HEADLAMP delivers on quality that won’t break the bank.

Cranking out 350 lumens on max, this headlamp comes with a BD 1800 rechargeable mAh lithium-ion battery, or you can get it in standard AAA if you’re old school like me. The rechargeable battery will save you money in the long run.

The Pack:

These were the two packs to choose from that cold day. Again, choose wisely when in questionable conditions. As long as you’re not bogging yourself down, your better off to have the ability to be warm if the weather were to shift, as we know all to well how possible that is in some of the places we decide to hunt.

Badlands 2200 Hunting Pack and Meat Hauler

It’s been 25 years since the birth of their first 2200 Pack, and a lot has changed. One thing hasn’t changed, the Badlands 2200 Hunting Pack and Meat Hauler is still at the cutting edge of load-carrying perfection.

BASE LAYER:

Layering for the long haul during cold weather conditions is essential, and just like you wouldn’t skimp on the foundation of your home, you shouldn’t cut corners with your body’s foundation base layer either.

A good cold weather base layer should provide moisture wicking technologies with warmth and breathability, allowing you to maintain the most important thing in extreme cold conditions, your central core body heat.

On a side note, we always suggest throwing some body warmers in the pack before taking out on a long cold hunt. They’re very lightweight, take up very little space, and can make a marked difference in morale and comfort.

First Lite Kiln Crew Top

The First Lite Kiln Crew incorporates a re-engineered fit into a new midweight 250 Merino-X fabric to create an essential part of your layering system. Worn as either a base layer or a mid layer, its guaranteed to keep you comfortable and odor-free all season long.

The Kiln midweight 250 Merino-X fabric utilizes ultrafine, 18.5 micron merino wool in a high loft, interlock knit to create styles that surpass expectations in the broadest range of temperature and weather conditions. Blending a small component of spandex into this knit, these lofted interlock pieces can withstand extended hunts in the field.

Featuring flatlock seams, a brushed, jacquard waistband and an articulated fit, the Furnace Long John leverages the loft, structure and stretch of Merino-X fabric.

Furnace EXP 350 Merino-X fabric incorporates a brushed (or fleeced) backside to high loft, interlock knits to provide super-charged insulation without added weight. Adding this to the silent, odor-free benefits of merino wool, the Furnace merino is the hands-down choice for cold weather hunts.

  • True to size: Purchase your normal size to wear over or under other layers

  • 20.5 micron, superfine merino wool

  • 95% merino / 5% spandex

  • Expedition weight, fleeced Merino fabric for extreme cold

  • Full length

  • Jacquard waistband

  • Fully functional fly

  • Flatlock seams

MID LAYER:

The primary purpose of a good mid-layer is to provide insulation.

Worn on top of the base layer and underneath the outerwear, the position and function are just like that of the insulation in your home, sandwiched between layers and creating a buffer where the heat that is generated from your body can remain trapped, keeping you warm and toasty.

You might wear more than one mid-layer at a time depending on how cold it is. This allows you to add on if you need more warmth or peel off those extra layers if you feel yourself getting hot enough to produce more than a little sweat.

Sweating is not uncommon when hiking out on a hunt in cold weather conditions and lots of layers. However, you want to keep a close eye on this. A little perspiration is unavoidable. A lot of perspiration can go badly with a quickness if you’re not prepared.

Hopefully you’ve already made the right choices for a solid moisture wicking base layer and are ready to move forward with the next in your layering system, the mid-layer(s).

OUTER LAYER:

And here are the two items that would have completely changed my experience up on the mountain that day. If I’d had these two outer layer components, I would have had a wonderful time. The lessons we learn…

Your choice for an outer layer will be your first line of defense. This is the protective shell of your “house”.

It needs to be tough enough to withstand the elements, while still allowing you to be agile enough to climb, reach, twist and bend.

If you’ve got a decent hike ahead of you, you will likely not last long in your outer layer before you are stuffing it in your pack, and packability is something that you certainly want to consider if you’re a back-country hunter.

If you’re going to be in a stand and/or glassing for long periods of time, you’ll need something to keep you comfortably warm while sitting perfectly still. This could be during some downright nasty conditions, so choose wisely.

As I said before, a lot of our gear today has a fairly hefty price tag. Depending on how serious you are, this cold weather layering system is worth every penny and, if taken care of, could last you a lifetime of hunts.

Sitka Gear Blizzard Parka

The Sitka Gear Blizzard Parka will keep you toasty and comfortable so that you are more than ready for the moment that you’ve been waiting for all season.

Sealed cuffs keep water out and heat in while the fleece lined pockets keep the hands toasty.

The drop away hood leaves your peripheral vision intact while holding in heat and hangs comfortably down your back without pulling at your collar when not in use.

The Sitka Gear Blizzard Parka is the ultimate in outer layer protection in the harshest of cold climates, hands down!

The technical cut and pliant, quiet material give maximum freedom of movement without any unnecessary weight to slow you down. The perfect choice in rain, sleet and hard winds.

These waterproof, technical three-layer Eco-Shell trousers are for activities above the treeline and are waiting for you to take the next step, always.

Engineered for unrestricted movement with absolute durability. Full-length AquaGuard zippers at the sides let out excess moisture and let you put on/take off the trousers without having to take boots off.

HANDS:

When your hands are cold you are constantly aware that your hands are cold. This alone already diverts your attention away from the hunt. Not to mention the obvious potential dangers of frostbite, if placed in the wrong situation at the wrong time.

I like to take at least 2 pairs of gloves into the field with me and I always have at least a mid-size emergency back-up pair for “just in case” scenarios. One heavy-duty and ultra-warm thick pair, and another thinner pair that I can still shoot with that can act as a liner until I’m ready to pull the trigger.

For bow and arrow, the same can apply, but this is also when a good hand muffler or warmer comes in real handy.

Don’t forget to throw some Hot Hands hand warmers in the pack. They’re great for long cold stints in the tree stand when there is not a lot of movement going on and they fit right in the palm. They can also be tossed into pockets when not being used on the hands and potentially act as body warmers.

The Blizzard GTX Mitten is a beast of a glove made of rugged waterproof material on the outside to protect your hands from rain and snow. It has a removable insulated liner to deliver warmth in frigid conditions.

By not separating the fingers, these mittens allow the fingers to remain together underneath the Gore-Tex laminate shell for added warmth. The shell and liner can also be worn independent of each other to adapt to the fluid conditions of big game pursuits in late-season conditions.

Pittarrd Oiltac leather palms provide tactile sensitivity in the most adverse conditions, allowing you to glass through rain, sleet and snow.

These gloves are crucial to keep your hands warm and protected whether you’re actively trekking or sitting for long periods of time in harsh conditions.

HEAD, NECK, & FACE:

I don’t think I have to tell you how important it is to protect your head, neck, and face. Besides the fact that your brain is there, a lot of precious body heat can escape through the cranium making it crucial that you trap that heat with some sort of hat or insulated cover. We are going to take a look at a few options here in which to do so.

Also, your neck, that area that we just inherently guard anyway, is the gateway between your head and your core, or torso. This is another way that precious life saving warmth can be lost if not covered properly.

And, the face. It houses our eyes, nose, and mouth. Utmost importance and not much more to say here, really. Let’s see what we can do to protect these invaluable parts.

FEET:

Your feet are your roots, your direct connection between you and the ground. When they don’t work, you don’t move. At least not very efficiently.

Every step you take is taken for granted when you don’t have foot pain or discomfort. We don’t have to think much about walking when everything is going well and as planned. Let’s keep it that way by preparing.

There is little in which we ruminate over more on a long cold hike, than the remembrance of better times (an hour ago), when our feet were warm and without blister. THAT is when we are reminded of the importance of taking care of our feet and, by THEN, it’s too late. You’re in it now, mister! Never forget and always prepare and you’ll be all the happier a hunter!

Don’t forget to throw some extra toe and foot warmers in the pack before you head out. This can be a real morale booster toward the end of a long cold hunt and you can usually pack enough for a pal or two.

EYE PROTECTION:

Good eye protection, though not the most important item on our cold weather hunting preparedness list today, should not be understated, nor its importance underestimated.

In the inland northwest, winters are commonly very sunny with a lot of snow on the ground. And, if you’re not accustomed to that, you may not know that this combination can induce almost migraine level headaches in easily less than an hour.

Also, protection from the wind and the things that the winter wind can whip up is very important when trying to keep your eyes steady, protected, and free of obstructing tears.

Keep in mind, though, in nature there aren’t very many shiny things that cast a glare except for bodies of water or small puddles. So just be mindful that you’re not casting a glare into the eyes of your unsuspecting prey.

BLUPOND  Polarized Sports Sunglasses

BLUPOND Sport Sunglasses are lightweight, polycarbonate, polarized shades for a bargain price. They’re about twice the price as the VertX Men’s Polarized Sunglasses, but perhaps, worth it.

However, if you are the type that can hang on to your specs, BLUPOND Sunglasses make a fine product. And, though they are built to last amidst inevitable drops, scratches, and squishes, they do offer up a solid complementary hard case to help you take good care of them.

FEATURES:

  • Lightweight

  • Polycarbonate

  • Anti-glare

  • Polarized Copper Tinted Lenses

“Nothing burns like the cold.”
— George R.R. Martin

The next time I am packing and preparing to head out on a hunt, I will be sure to take the time to ask myself more questions and make sure I am making sound decisions.

You can’t always predict how things are going to go, so having the ability to foresee potential outcomes is a valuable asset.

No matter what the weather, preparedness needs to be a daily practice and considered second nature. Apply it to everything you do, big and small, as seemingly small decisions can have huge consequences.

Good luck on your next hunt and, if you have success, check out THE 3 BEST DEEP FREEZERS FOR HUNTERS (THAT YOU CAN BUY ONLINE!)

Until next time, stay rugged, stay prepared!
