Bushcrafting and backcountry outdoorsmanship are the backbone of what makes an experienced sportsman. A basic understanding, if not a tested skillset, are a must for venturing far off the beaten path.

Bushcrafters and true wilderness expeditionists all share a kindred love of mother nature and her beauty, and they both require specific tools to help them reap the harvest mother nature provides.

Bushcrafters differ from wilderness expeditionists in that they seek to construct their shelter from the bounty of mother nature rather than pack a tent or hammock.

Some bushcrafters may self impose rules on technology or other comforts of modernity in an effort to obtain a true hearkening to the past. Even still, that requires a small cadre of items that are essential.

Conventional wilderness seekers require many of the same items, and likely a few more, which help them be efficient in whatever backcountry undertaking they’re engaged in.

Like carpentry or mechanic work, the outdoorsman/bushcrafter lifestyle will bring on a litany of tools and gadgets to fill various human needs away from our convenient infrastructure. We have built civilization and with it, lost an up close and personal account of not having creature comforts.

Bushcrafters and wilderness seekers seem to relish maintaining a connection to that primitive past, to a past where we were living off the land and using it’s incredible bounty.

It’s amazing what a well clothed individual can do with just an axe, knife, and rope. It’s amazing what an individual can do with just a big sturdy bushcraft knife, for that matter.

While you can slim it down and go very primitive, there are some other items along the way that might make your wilderness experience a bit more cozy and well provisioned by the fire.

With these things in mind, let’s get straight to taking a look at the 23 Gift Ideas for Bushcrafters & this Holiday Season!

2021 Holiday Gift Guide for Bushcrafters & Outdoorsmen

THE AXE

Gransfors Bruk Hunters Axe

The axe is perhaps the most classic backcountry tool.

With the advance in technology on bowie knives and camp saws, which we will visit soon; the camp axe is no longer an absolute requirement.

However, it remains one of the most dependable instruments of utilizing nature’s bounty.

From building shelter, to chopping firewood, to an additional weapon if needed; the axe is a multi-millennia old favorite of rugged men everywhere.

Equipped with an 18.5” handle made of hickory, the GRANSFORS BRUK HUNTER’S AXE was designed with the backcountry hunter in mind. The axe is hand forged in Sweden and your smith’s initials will even be stamped on your axehead.

This axe is ideal for splitting wood or chopping down small trees, and is also designed to skin animals and process harvested game. This versatility, and the axe’s high craftsmanship is why I chose this axe for backcountry and wilderness applications.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● 18.5” Handle made of hickory

● Vegetable tanned leather sheath

● 20-year guarantee from Gransfors Bruk

● Special Alloyed High Carbon Steel Blade/Head

THE KNIFE

ESEE Knives 6P-B

The Knife is my absolute must have tool in the bush. I often heard it said that with a big sturdy knife, you can survive even if you have nothing else.

It makes sense too, it can kill and process game. It can chop small trees and you can mallet it through slightly larger trees to hew construction materials for shelter. It can process your fuel and help start your fire. The knife is indispensable for anyone who seeks the backcountry.

I prefer larger knives for bushcraft, because I don’t always carry an axe. A big, sturdy bushcraft knife can be your lifeline if you're put in a survival situation.

I chose the ESEE KNIVES 6P-B for just this reason. It is nearly a foot long and boasts a blade of six and a half inches. The blade is made of 1095 high-carbon and is 3/16ths thick! That makes this blade able to withstand malleting into larger trees and digging.

The 1095 steel does require regular sharpening, but is one of the easier steels to edge up and is highly durable. The large blade also makes it a bit heavy, weighing in at around 12oz out of the sheath.

The Micarta handle feels good in the hand and holds up well in wet conditions. If you don’t mind packing a large blade, you cannot go wrong with this one!

FEATURES & SPECS:

● 11.75” long overall with 6.5”blade length

● 12oz (knife only)

● Full tang construction with lanyard hold

● Polymer sheath

● Micarta handle

● 1095 High-Carbon Steel

● Lifetime guarantee

Even if you carry an axe or knife into the bush, or both, you will find life is easier with a good saw. It makes processing firewood and making crude construction cuts a breeze and will have you enjoying the view more quickly.

I own a SILKY fixed blade curve saw and a friend owns the SILKY POCKETBOY. After using both I can say that the POCKETBOY delivers every bit of the efficiency as my fixed blade version. This saw is truly entertaining to cut with.

Japanese made, the SILKY company has not only engineered a great design, but they have some of the sharpest blade teeth I have ever seen. I recommend SILKY’s above all other brands of outdoor handsaw without exception.

It folds for ease of storage in your pack, it is coated in chrome and rust-resistant. The impulse-hardened non-set tooth design is what makes this blade zing and allows it to be one of the most efficient on the market. It has two open locking positions, a belt clip, and a clear storage case.

This saw will solve any bushcraft need involving mid to small sized timber. I recommend the 170 mm 6 and ¾ inch blade.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● 6 ¾ inch blade

● Orange handle for high visibility (mine blends in and was almost lost once)

● Folds and stores easily

● Belt clip and clear hard storage case

● Chrome-coated, rust-resistant blade

● Impulse-hardened non-set tooth design

These days in the backcountry you not only have to be able to pack a large amount of water, but you should be able to purify harvested water as you go.

The easiest way to do this is to have a water bladder in your pack, preferably 3 liters or more, and an inline filtration system for when you must harvest water from the earth.

If you’re accustomed to bottle packing, it is a bit of an adjustment drinking from the tube but it has its advantages.

Drinking on the go is much easier, and the inline filtration makes hauling your hydration needs a dream. Compared to a classic filter and bottle set up, which work well but are bulky, the modern bladder and inline filter is a technological advancement I happen to appreciate.

The EVER NATURAL 3L WATER BLADDER is BPA free, leak proof, and .6 mm thick for extra durability. It boasts the double opening for ease of cleaning, and an insulated hose for keeping your H2O cool.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● 3 liters

● BPA free

● Leak Proof

● Dual openings

● Highly durable and wear resistant 0.6mm thick liner

● Insulated hose keeping your water cool

The SAWYER MINI DUAL THREADED WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM is an excellent and versatile little water filter. I

t removes 99.99999% of all bacteria and 99.9999% of all protozoa and cysts, and one hundred percent of microplastics.

This little filter is rated to be effective for up to 100,000 gallons. It’s dual threaded design allows it to be attached to bottles and bladders, and makes it perfect for backcountry water filtration.

This package includes the in-line adapter which makes it able to attach to our bladder hose and no longer worry about it, for 100,000 gallons at least.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● Removes 100% of microplastics, 99.99999% of bacteria, and 99.9999% of protozoa and cysts

● Dual threading allows for inline or bottle attachment

● Filters up to 100,000 gallons

● Comes with 0.5 liter collapsible pouch, cleaning coupling, inline adapter, and syringe

● Inline adapter critical in attaching to bladder or bottle

Being able to properly prepare a meal makes a good outing great. There is nothing like harvesting game and preparing it fresh. Packing in a few essentials helps extend your luxury. One of the essentials for my backcountry multi-nighters is a cast iron skillet.

They do add weight, but they can cook anything and typically cook any veggies you harvest or bring with you, right alongside whatever meat you’re preparing.

As always the infusion of iron enriches your food and adds to your supplemental iron consumption, which is great for energy and endurance. Cast iron’s low maintenance cleaning is ideal for backcountry use, and they can be attached to a pack for easy transport.

All in all, the cast iron’s durability and versatility make it easy to see why it was a staple of the high plains and prairies of the old west. The LODGE - LOGIC CAST IRON SKILLET is available in two sizes, 6-½ inch and 8 inch, I prefer the larger to fit more food at once.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● Skillet Size: 8 inches

● Skillet Color: Black

● SKillet Material: 100% Cast Iron

The KA-BAR TACTICAL SPORK was given to me as a gift and it is the best backcountry utensil set I have ever had.

The Spoke teeth are just enough to grip a well-cut piece of meat, and the knife is so good it easily doubles as a weapon.

If a predator attacked me while eating, I may have a shot with the KA-BAR TACTICAL SPORK.

The Spork and serrated Knife interlock for ease of storage, which make it the most non-invasive set of camp utensils I’ve ever owned. These two reasons make it my recommendation, especially for long expeditions.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● Polymer Plastic material, durable and rust proof

● Two-piece construction includes spork and when separated, a serrated knife

● Food and detergent safe for ease of cleaning

● 6.875” overall length

● Made in the USA

THE MESS KIT

MSR Alpine Plate

No bells and whistles in this department. I have tried many different types of mess kit to find what I like the most. And what I like the most is one stainless steel plate.

It is easy to clean, easy to stabilize, and it does not get destroyed easily. It is also fairly lightweight and can usually fit inside your cast iron skillet when you attach it to your pack.

The MSR ALPINE PLATE is the Ringo Starr of this list because it’s solid and steady, but under appreciated.

Sure, picking out a good mess plate isn’t as cool or as fun as getting a new axe and using it; but you’ll be sure glad you got a quality plate when you are three or more days into a trek.

The MSR ALPINE PLATE is a solid and basic camp plate which will serve its purpose without taking over your pack.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● Stainless Steel

● Round

● 4.4oz

Having seasonings for your food is crucial. Some seasonings are luxuries, but others like salt are essential to our health. Nothing knocks back the warm spirit of prepping a wilderness meal like having a subpar, bland flavor.

We are more accustomed to seasonings in our modern convenience, and it’s something we don’t have to sacrifice when heading to the backcountry.

COGHLINS has made a small non-invasive little jar with dividers, allowing for multiple spices in the small space. The jars are reusable, and can be repacked with your preferred arsenal of seasonings.

SPECS

● Sealable lid

● Reusable

● Included: Paprika, Curry, Cayenne, Garlic Salt, Black Pepper, Salt

You’ve heard me reference it in a few of the previous descriptions. A good pack is a required piece of equipment when trekking into the backcountry.

There’s no way you could carry and wear all the accommodations you’ll need, so a pack that can handle all your gear and keep your hands free is non-negotiable.

THE OSPREY XENITH 88 is perfect for backcountry expeditions or packing along your bushcraft tools. At 88 liters it’s rated to carry up to 70lbs of gear and comes hydration system ready with a slot for up to a 3 liter bladder. You can also remove the top of the pack to break it down into a daypack, which is pretty versatile.

Each side has zipper access into the body of the pack allowing you to access the inside without opening the top. Ideally this pack is worn with the top of the pack even with the top of your head or even a bit higher, your shoulders will thank you for making the proper strap adjustments.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● 88 liter (40-70lb capacity)

● Removable top compartment which can be converted into a day pack

● External hydration reservoir supporting up to a 3L bladder

● Zipper access to main compartment on each side

● Zippered belt pockets allow you to keep frequently used items close by

No trip into the backcountry should be undertaken without a solid compass. It can be easy spending multiple days in deep woods, to become a little out of orientation with the four directions.

A good compass can mean the difference between getting yourself in a bad situation or just having a normal good time. I prefer lensatic compasses due to their fail safe readings, if you know how to line them up and find your azimuth.

This type of compass is the standard for Army and Marine Corps field units, and LIBERTY MOUNTAIN has delivered with the ULTIMATE SURVIVAL LENSATIC COMPASS.

Not only is this compass durable and built to industry standards in terms of lensatics, but features glow in the dark lettering for ease of navigation if you become lost at night. This is a simple, but crucial addition to any backcountry arsenal.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● Standard liquid filled lensatic compass

● Glow in the dark lettering

● Adjustable lens

● Durable construction

Many bushcrafters enjoy roughing it and constructing their own sleeping arrangements from the materials the forest provides. But if you're expedition hunting or hiking, you’re likely carrying a warm sleeping bag.

Temperature ratings are of course subject to one’s climatic needs, but for the purpose of this list, we are focusing on cold climate rated bags, and the PEREGRINE ALTAI 0 DOWN BLEND is my new favorite.

I have owned a Kelty previously and it served me well, but the ALTAI 0, with it’s Primaloft down blend insulation, is really comfortable. There is just something about down insulation that is highly effective and comfortable in the harshest of climates.

The Shell is DWR treated with a 20D 380t Nylon Ripstop, which is designed to not only be durable but water repelling. The anti-snag zipper tape on the #5 YKK zippers is perhaps my favorite feature as it eliminates one of the more pesky hassles in the tent.

The PEREGRINE ALTAI 0 DOWN BLEND SLEEPING BAG is the perfect bag for any adventurer in northern or alpine climates.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● SIZE for regular: 80”X 29”X 21”

● Primaloft down silver blend is Bluesign approved with RDS certified supply- chain

● Carry size: 14”X 9”

● Carry weight: 2lb 12oz

● Regular fill weight: 850g

● DWR treated 20D 380t Ripstop Nylon Shell

● Regular fits up to 6’ comfortably - longer and larger versions available

SHELTER FROM THE STORM

Rab Ridge Raider Bivi

Once again, many bushcrafters will not need to bring a shelter along as it is always fun constructing your own, but if you are heading out on an expedition you may find it useful to take a shelter along.

Especially with today’s technology, we have many great shelters that are small and weigh practically nothing. The RAB RIDGE RAIDER BIVI is that shelter.

The small but effective one pole hoop design provides structure to keep the fabric off your face, while adding virtually no weight. This is the perfect shelter for bug out bags and outdoorsmen who venture into the mountains regularly.

At 100 inches long and 31.5 inches wide it would just about handle a Sasquatch’s bedding needs. I really enjoy the dark olive color scheme as well, as I prefer camp items that blend better with my surroundings.

Perhaps the best feature is that the RAB RIDGE RAIDER BIVI weighs just 37oz. The RAB RIDGE RAIDER BIVI is a no brainer for anyone multi-nighting in the backcountry.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● Weight: 37oz

● Dimensions: 31.5”W X 100.4”L X 23.6” H

● 3L 40D eVentA(™) fabric

● 1 external pole 8mm DAC Pressfit

● Head door entry

● 1 mesh door

● 6 V Stakes

● Packed Size: 12” X 6”

A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS

Black Diamond Revolt 350 Headlamp

Headlamps are really nice to have while in the backcountry. Those of us who live in towns or cities forget how much light we are constantly flooded with, until we get out into the wilds.

It helps around camp at night to have a headlamp. They free your hands for use and are generally fairly comfortable to wear. A good headlamp allows you to find your way and work in the dark if need be.

Black Diamond has been one of the best headlamp manufacturers for a while now and the REVOLT 350 HEADLAMP delivers on quality that won’t break the bank.

Cranking out 350 lumens on max, this headlamp comes with a BD 1800 rechargeable mAh lithium-ion battery, or you can get it in standard AAA if you’re old school like me. The rechargeable battery will save you money in the long run.

The BLACK DIAMOND REVOLT 350 HEADLAMP headlamp is rain and sleet tested to ensure performance in any element, and would be a great addition to any adventurer’s expedition pack.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● BD 1800 rechargeable mAh lithium-ion battery included

● AAA battery model available

● Beam: 82m on high (AAA alkaline)

● Brightness memory for turning on and off without continually adjusting

● IPX4 Storm Proof: tested to withstand rain and sleet from any angle

● Max brightness setting = 350 lumens

Even half serious jaunts into the wilderness should be accompanied by a first aid kit. You never know what you’re going to run, fall, or snag into and it helps to be prepared for the inevitable inconvenience. Hopefully it is that and just that, an inconvenience.

First aid kits, in my experience, are great to have around for doctoring cuts and providing aspirin or tylenol to knock down a headache. But they also provide larger wound pads and other accessories that make them quite handy to have.

The LIFELINE HARDSELL FIRST AID KIT provides a great assortment of standard backcountry first aid supplies, in a nice hardshell case to protect it against other items in your pack. I recommend the 85 piece, because considering the price difference why not have 32-45 more pieces.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● Size Dimensions: 6” X 7.75” X 2.5”

● 85 piece (30, 53, 121, and 208 piece kits available)

● Hard shell container that is easy to store and durable

● Carabiner for the ability to attach to the outside of a pack

The DANNER MOUNTAIN 600 is one of the most comfortable hiking boots I have ever put on my feet.

Their design almost makes them walk like a tennis shoe, but you know you have the sturdiness of a well made boot the second the trail kicks your foot one way and your ankle another.

Danner is one of the most trusted names in modern boot making, and it’s because they deliver on a great product. These boots are highly durable and keep your feet comfortable and dry.

The Danner Dry waterproof liners and the Vibram ® SPE Midsole make these boots ideal for a northern climate and right at home in a damp climate, so they can handle whatever your backcountry throws at them.

My favorite feature is how lightweight the boots are. When you are in for long treks, you don’t want boots or clothes weighing you down, and the DANNER MOUNTAIN 600 HIKING BOOTS will not.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● OrthoLite ® footbed

● Danner Dry Liner for waterproofing

● TPU heel frame

● Waterproof suede exterior

● Vibram ® SPE midsole

● Vibram ® Fuga outsole

● Pair weighs 37oz

No question that an easy way to strike sparks into tinder is invaluable in a bushcraft or backcountry scenario. Fire is a morale lifter whether your spirits are up or down, it provides warmth at night, and the ability to cook food.

We all know fire is a likely part of the equation if you're doing serious backcountry excursions, so it goes without saying you need to pick up a ferro rod and keep it in your pack or wherever it will be most handy.

Practice with your ferro rod so that you are not attempting to use it the first time during a situation where you really need to be successful.

The UBERLEBEN ZUNDEN FIRE STARTER is one of the most popular ferro rods on the market and it’s because they make a quality ferro rod.

The UBERLEBEN ZUNDEN FIRE STARTER rig comes with a striker so you do not have to wear and tear your blade to utilize this striker. They come in 5/16ths, 3/8ths, and Half Inch increments.

I recommend the half inch as it will withstand more strikes and last you longer.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● Uberleben’s Sanftkorr ferrocerium is a trademarked blend that is durable and produces a 5,500 degree spark

● Handcrafted hardwood handle

● Available in varying sizes from 5/16 to ½

● Lanyard for neck carry

● Uberleben ensures every product by offering 100% free repair and replacement if you’re not satisfied

DON’T LOOSE YOUR EDGE!

Sharp Pebble Premium Whetstone

No trek into the bush should be carried out without packing along a method of sharpening your knives and axes.

A whetstone is a classic blade sharpening tool and has been used by bushcrafters for many generations.

The SHARP PEBBLE PREMIUM WHETSTONE is a great addition to your arsenal, not only because the stone can be packed by itself into the bush, but because it comes with a non-slip bamboo base and an angle guide.

Those features will come in more handy when you are at base camp or your home and prepping your blades for the journey. This versatility makes the SHARP PEBBLE PREMIUM WHETSTONE my favorite.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● Double sided with #1000/#6000

● Will sharpen any blade

● Bamboo base for no slip

● Angle guide for better edging

Being able to keep yourself dry in wet conditions is a huge morale booster and energy saver.

The elements have the potential to zap energy with a fury if you’re not protected against them and rain is one of the worst culprits.

Even in warmer weather, being wet can bring down your core body temperature in a hurry. At a minimum, this can make for a very uncomfortable experience and take your mind off of important bush and camp tasks.

Helly Hansen Men's Packable Rain Pant

I love my Helly Hansen rain suit.

It is a bit more ideal for cooler weather and cool climates in general, but can be used in up to 75 degree weather. With the right base layer combination, this suit can be damn good protection at surprisingly low temps.

This combo has served me well for many years with no sign of wear. I will buy this exact combo again when/if the time ever comes!

FEATURES & SPECS:

● Helox+ waterproofing technology

● Welded on hand pockets

● Adjustable snap cuffs

● Button closed storm flap

Unless you are fortunate enough to live in the wilderness, you are likely packing some things you’d rather not get wet or otherwise damaged.

A good dry storage case is a great addition to your backcountry arsenal. The GEKOBRANDS WATERPROOF DRY BOX is large enough to fit multiple items. It is perfect for housing a phone with keys and wallet.

You don’t require a fancy case for backcountry travel, but you require something that does it’s job well, and this dry case does just that.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● Front latches make it easy to open and close

● Carry handle

● Silicone liner to ensure seal

● I recommend the large box with interior dimensions of: 8.25” X 5.75” X 2.75”

A good telescoping rod and reel is the perfect addition to a backcountry arsenal. Not only does it provide an easy way to harvest protein, but it provides relaxing entertainment as well.

The telescoping rods are a game changer for those who have previously left rods out of their deep treks due to their awkward packing inconvenience. T

his is no longer a problem with the PULSINNO FISHING TELESCOPING ROD, and this particular combo is rated to handle saltwater excursions too!

You may recognize this combo as it made my list of THE 5 BEST ROD & REEL COMBOS FOR CREEK FISHING IN 2020

FEATURES & SPECS:

● High density carbon fiber mixed with fiberglass construction

● Stainless steel hooded reel seat is anti seawater corrosion

● Power: Medium

● Deep aluminium spool with anti-reverse handle

● 5.2:1 gear ratio

PROCESSING GAME IN THE FIELD

Outdoor Edge RazorLite EDC

Having a proper field dressing and skinning knife in the arsenal is a boon to your capabilities as a bushcrafter and expeditionist.

The ability to purify water, and then process game into consumable food ensures that you can stay in the backcountry about as long as you want to. It also gives you the satisfaction of knowing you can survive outside the grey, grid world.

OUTDOOR EDGE has been making waves in the processing and skinning knife game for a number of years now and it’s because they make one of the sharpest knives on the market, the Outdoor Edge RazorLite EDC.

The Japanese 420J2 blades are extremely sharp, so much so that I recommend handling this tool with total respect and caution. Do not use this particular knife to make blind cuts into the animal, only areas that you can see and where yours and anyone else’s hands are clear of the blade.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● Easy to change blade system, allowing you to keep a sharp blade in the knife at all times

● All replacement blades are Japanese 420J2 Stainless Steel

● Oxide-coated, black blade holder

● Glass and Nylon GRIVORY handle with TPR inserts and a pocket clip

● Outdoor Edge offers a lifetime service and replacement guarantee

No backcountry or bushcrafter list would be complete without a proper rope rated for climbing.

The natural world throws all kinds of crazy terrain at us, which is part of the reason we love to explore it so much! Sometimes having a few hundred feet of hearty climbing rope is just what you need to get where you’re going.

I chose the SINGING ROCK ROUTE 44 because of their respected name in the industry. I am not an avid rock climber, but I keep some of the gear around for backcountry uses, and this rope is a great addition if you are lacking this gear.

I prefer the 11 mm even though it is a bit more expensive, it is not so expensive that it outweighs the extra peace of mind. This may seem like an optional item, but if you’re a serious bushcrafter or expeditionist, then you will be in the market for a climbing rope sooner or later.

I also like to have AT LEAST 100 ft. of paracord on me just about anywhere I go. That includes just rolling around in my every day life. I keep 100 ft. in my small MOUNTAINSMITH EDC bag and about 30 ft. neatly rolled up in my pocket.

Rope & cordage can also be utilized in other capacities such as carrying something in tow or hanging clothes out to dry.

FEATURES & SPECS:

● Weighs 77 grams per meter

● 34 kN strength

● CE and UIAA certified

● 11 mm

● 300’ recommended (ranges from 150’ to 600’)

“Plant a stick in the ground and lie down on your back. Looking at the top of the stick like a gun sight, line this up with a star. After several minutes, the star will appear to have moved as the earth has rotated. If the star moves left, you are facing north. If the star moves up, you are facing east. If the star moves right, you are facing south. If it moves down, you are facing west.”

―  Dave Canterbury Bushcraft 101: A Field Guide to the Art of Wilderness Survival

And there you have it, folks. Perhaps there are a few items you forgot about and perhaps there are a few you were expecting. If you have a bushcrafter or backcountry-loving friend or family member, then you may already be acquainted with most of the types of items listed here.

One item not to forget that didn’t make the list, however should be neatly tucked away in your pack is the SAS Survival Handbook, Third Edition: The Ultimate Guide to Surviving Anywhere.

Being able to stop and reference a solid resource out there can come in real handy if you find yourself in an unusual situation and could use a little guidance.

But when things are running smoothly, if your bushcrafter friend or loved one is like me, they enjoy reading, but not quite as much as playing with the toys.

Safe traversing and happy hunting!
