What is the Best Fuel for a Forge?
You’ll need to decide which and what type of forge will work best for you. One important decision you will have to make is whether to go with a coal/wood-fired or a propane/gas forge.
Since there is always a certain level of carbon monoxide produced by both of these fossil fuels, good ventilation is essential no matter which fuel you choose. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each option a little closer.
The Coal-Fired Forge
Coal, a traditional fuel for forging, burns hotter and more efficiently than both gas and wood. With a coal fueled forge you can use hand cranked blowers, meaning that you can forge in places that don't have electricity available.
Coal forges don't require pressurized gas, eliminating a safety concern. It is also quieter and doesn’t use as much fuel when “idle”. If you live where this fuel is readily available, the cost is next to nothing.
On the other hand, coal requires more skill, it is messier, and can be smoky and stinky. Coal forges have to be cleaned out and have to have clinker, coal, and coke, all separated after each use.
Can You Forge With a Wood Fire?
Wood is certainly a pleasant way to go as far as the smell it puts out. The convenience of a resource that can be found almost anywhere available is another positive consideration.
However, this option as a fuel for forging requires a very large amount of well-seasoned wood and a special forge design. Prepare to burn through a lot of this fuel very quickly.

Can You Run a Forge on Natural Gas?
Ever growing in popularity, gas forges are relatively clean to operate, easy to use, and portable. This fuel source is contained in a pressurized cylinder, reducing mess, and has less need for any type of chimney apparatus. However, you do need some source of ventilation and this is very important. They also don’t require constant maintenance and attention while they’re running.
On the flip-side, as for the purists, gas is certainly not traditional and generally more expensive. Not only expensive to use, but for the initial cost of the forge itself. Gas forges are noisy, whether idling or being used in full force. With less overall control of the temperature, they create a much hotter shop environment than coal does.
