The Top 7 Waders for Hunting & Fishing in 2022
For most of us, our time in the outdoors is very precious and sometimes hard to come by. With this in mind, we need to stress the importance of making the most of our outdoor endeavors.
We have all, at one time or another, ventured out into the great outdoors only to find our adventures cut short for lack of preparedness, wasting precious time.
For waterfowl hunters and stream/surf anglers alike, choosing the proper pair of waders is crucial. This can mean the difference between enjoying your time or cutting the trip short to get back to the truck to warm up and get dry.
Fortunately, if we know our weather conditions and environment, we can easily head into the water prepared to stay warm and dry.
Today, we’re going to take a closer look at some factors you’ll want to consider before clicking the buy button. Hopefully, by the end of this article the choice will be clear for you.
How Should My Waders Fit?
One of the most important factors in choosing the right waders is how they fit. Chances are you are going to be wearing them for extended periods of time, so taking the time to find the most comfortable pair you can is important.
The proper fit of your waders will also ensure they will last a long time. Both too tight and too loose of a fit will stress out the material and your waders will degrade much faster than a proper fitting pair.
Three general factors in determining the proper fit for your waders are very simple. Get these measurements:
The largest girth around your waist, hips, or chest, whichever is greater
Your inseam from the crotch area to the floor
What size boot do you wear?
Just about every serious company will have sizing charts for their various types of waders based on your various types of activities and environments.
What Material is Best for Waders?
Right up there at the top of the list of importance when choosing the right waders for your outdoor experience is the material we choose.
Staying cool in the heat and warm in the cold is obviously the goal here. Staying dry, of course, applies to both.
Knowing the environment you’re going to be immersing yourself in will determine the thickness and type of material you’ll want to choose.
If you live in an area with hotter temperatures where the warmer waters flow, breathability is paramount. You’ll probably want to go with a thinner pair as well.
This will help to allow any coolness of the water to transfer to your body while you’re facing air temps that are hotter in nature.
In colder environments you’re certainly going to want to go for a thicker and well insulated pair. Thick rubber/neoprene are your friendly choices here.
No matter what your conditions are breathability is something to consider for them all, even if you’re out all day in the bitter cold. If you’ve got yourself nice and toasty in there but your waders are not breathable, you’re going to find yourself sweating.
Sweating in cold weather never bodes well for the human body and hypothermia can set in quickly, even in 50 degree weather.
The three main types of material to research before you head out are:
NEOPRENE: The most popular material for many years used by hunters and anglers alike who spend a great deal of time in cold weather waters.
For the coldest conditions, neoprene with added insulation, like Thinsulate is ideal. Lightweight, and flexible, neoprene waders are usually less expensive, which makes this material hard to top.
RUBBER: Can be resilient, the thicker the material, but offers little to no breathability and offers less range of motion than most other types of waders. However, rubber’s waterproofing qualities are unmatched, of course.
NYLON or POLYESTER: These materials are ideal for warmer conditions as they are breathable and made with a waterproof membrane, allowing for the evaporation of sweat to keep you dry.
They shouldn’t be ruled out for cooler waters, so long as you where warmer layers underneath, and you may find this to be ideal, even.
However, beware of a lack of durability and stress/ wear and tear on the bendy areas like the knees.
What Style of Waders Should I Buy?
The three main styles of wader are chest waders, hip waders, and wading pants. The depth of the waters you are traversing will be a main determining factor in which style you will choose.
CHEST WADERS
Basically waterproof overalls, chest waders offer the most protection from the elements and allow you to get into deeper waters that would normally be inaccessible without getting soaking wet. These are the most popular and common on the market.
Chest waders offer a boot foot or stocking foot option. The boot foot option offers a more exact size and fitting based on your actual shoe size, whereas the stocking foot option will be a general fit based on petite and large sizes and the chest and inseam measurements.
HIP WADERS
The old-fashioned hip wader is a great choice if you’re going to be wading in more shallow streams and ponds. They are basically tall rubber boots sewn onto waterproof pants with loops to attach to your belt or belt loops. They are simply fitted based on your boot size and are easy to mess with.
However, if you’re going to be trekking any distances they can be clunky and loose fitting, lacking in support and potentially a cause for blisters and sores. So you may have to haul them in.
WADING PANTS
Like chest waders, wading pants come in either boot foot or stocking foot options. However, like hip waders, this choice will keep you in more shallow waters.
In this case, the boot foot option will give you coverage to the waist. The stocking foot option combined with a good pair of your choice of studded wading boots is great for hiking in a ways on rough mountainous terrain.
With any pair of waders, don’t underestimate the importance of walking comfort.
What Kind of Waders Should I Buy for Duck Hunting?
Duck hunting, by default, usually puts in you in some pretty gnarly conditions. You can expect it to be wet and muddy, almost always, and don’t rule out windy conditions that bring on colder temps.
You can also expect to be in some pretty thick brush and tromping through a lot of abrasive materials.
With this knowledge, before heading into the field to hunt waterfowl, it is not a good idea to skimp on quality for this particular endeavor.
Many long hours in these conditions can conduct a lot of heat from your body, especially if you’re in a hunting blind, on the ground and not moving much.
Another important factor is picking the right camouflage. Depending on the appearance of your surroundings, the camo pattern you choose could make a world of difference.
Ducks can see objects both near and far simultaneously. Fortunately there are camo patterns for just about any place on earth available out there.
Can You Fish in Hunting Waders?
Both hunting and fishing waders have many different types for many different conditions within each category. So there are a lot of things to consider here with a lot of options to choose from.
However, this is not complicated. If your conditions for one are similar to the other, you can easily get by with one pair for both.
If you fish warm but hunt cold, perhaps you can get by with a mid-level insulation for summer while adding to your base layers underneath for winter.
If the differences are not that significant to begin with, you may have lucked out. If you can’t figure out a way to use one pair for both, you may have to consider a pair for both conditions.
Just make sure you do not skimp on durability, as this will be absolutely necessary come waterfowl season.
